Blog with Patsie McCandless: There IS Magic in Books

There is Magic in Books

Oh, to make the world magic again! You can! With young Jesse O’Neil and the everyday magic in his new book: The Secrets of Windy Hill.

We all want a little more magic in the world. And it’s not the magic of witches and wizards, or wands and potions.

It seems Auguste Rodin’s famous statue of the Thinker (above) is saying:

“I think… there IS magic in books!”

It IS all about the real magic in everyday life, especially in the everyday magic of childhood. My book series, Becoming Jesse and The Secrets of Windy Hill immerse the reader in our everyday magic… in the pages of these books.

Children and Magic and Books

Children are born knowing. They just know. Everything. It’s their magic, and oh, to keep their magic alive! The Secrets of Windy Hill is dedicated to that knowing magic within children:

For children everywhere –

those fireflies of Light

that flit into existence

and enchant our lives.

And now, for the child in all of us, it’s time… to find our magic. Know our magic. Believe in our magic. And shine, shine, shine, as young Jesse shines in his books: Becoming Jesse and The Secrets of Windy Hill. Jesse shines his magic inner Light – no matter what.

Enough of the dark in Books

The world has had quite enough of the dark, dreadly, dystopian stories. People are yearning for a story filled with a sparkling Light that sprinkles us all, daily, with magical-miracle blessings all around us – if we have eyes to see.

As Roald Dahl declares in The Minpins:

“And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you

because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places.

Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”

Experience the Magic in Books

We experience magic in our favorite fiction. Our books make us feel the encounters of our favorite characters. We become familiar with their inner magic as we get to participate – and taste – the delights or shiverals of their journeys.

Thus, we live through magic in our imagination.

The Beauty of this Magic in Books?

It really is quite simple: Magic is LOVE. Readers know it when they feel the gentle, sweet, tender knowings of a child who wears the mantle of love. As Jesse sings in his song, from the Nature Boy:

The greatest thing you’ll ever learn,

Is just to love and be loved in return.

Also, magic is HOPE. It is hope swaddled in belief in what can be… what will be.

Then again, magic is in our DREAMS. As Jesse’s grandmother, Dearie, says in the Prologue of The Secrets of Windy Hill:

“Here is the stardust that dreamers know.

Wonders… glittering. Secrets… awakening.

It is your magic. Your Light.

Becoming.”

Magic ~ more than a wish

This kind of magic is a WISH. I would say that, today, it is more than a wish. It is a hunger… a yearning be the magic. It is the magic that lives in our Souls… that renews our thoughts, words, imagination… all of which can change the trajectory of our lives.

A reader of The Secrets of Windy Hill understood the power of the magic in books, as he wrote:

“One moment of magic can transform your world.

This quote from The Secrets of Windy Hill says it all.

This can’t-put-it-down book is a perfect sequel to Becoming Jesse,

filled with fun, suspense, and adventure.”

—Saverio Rebecchi, author

A Reader’s Journey in the Magic of Books

Another reader wrote of Jesse’s magic:

“I couldn’t wait to continue the journey with Jesse.

The magic of childhood sparkles in Jesse,

and his words dance across the pages, leaving vivid pictures.

Jesse (has) lots of adventures and Light Lessons

— and that Light shining through is so much needed in our world today.”

— Kathy Dickenson, book lover

Magic in the new book: The Secrets of Windy Hill

Today is the day. Jesse O’Neil is embarking on his quest

to find his disappeared grandmother, Jessica,

on a remote island in New England.

He has solved every puzzle, uncovered every secret, saved every penny, and planned every detail. He is ready to go, sure that nothing can go wrong.

But, oh, how very mistaken he is. First, Jesse has to get out of jail.

Join Jesse on his tantalizing journey from bustling New York City to the wonders of rural island life, leading him straight into a nest of bedeviling secrets on Windy Hill Farm.

As he encounters heart-rattling escapades, unexpected mysteries, and menacing perils,

he tries to hold fast to his everyday magic – shining out from a heart that is still becoming, learning to trust, to love and lose … and love all over again.
