As a parent, I find the beauty of this book is that it offers so many opportunities for deeper discussion with my children. It is a book of historical fiction, set in the 1950s. So we talked about everyday things such as, “What’s a phone booth?” No cell phones for Jesse! But we also talked about such things as lonliness and friendship or how to stay positive when it feels like everything is going wrong. Luckily, Jesse was there to guide us, for McCandless uses Jesse’s adventures and mishaps as teachable moments, reminding us how we, too, can keep our “light on”! – K. Mills
