Real Magic is for Grown-Ups
The Magic of Childhood is real everyday Magic, and it is still within us as grown-ups, when we remember the child within each of us.
Last week, we met a 5 year-old girl who knows her magic – who believes in the magic of Santa, fairies, rainbows and butterflies. It’s easy to picture such magic in a child, especially at this Christmas season.
But what about grown-ups? People say that we lose our magic as we grow. Do we?
Lost and Found
I felt I had lost my magic, saddened for my sister, whose granddaughter had died in a sporting accident. What would Christmas be like for her and her family? Bereft, I went out for a walk, slowly climbing a nearby hill.
I heard squealing laughter and saw two little boys racing around their mother like darting sparrows. Suddenly, they dashed to me, holding out little monster figures. “We got these before Christmas! Mine’s Sonic!” The younger added, “Mine’s Nick – for Santa Claus!” Unexpectedly, I found myself smiling. They were like bells jingling with happiness. I laughed, and the boy grinned, “Wanna play?”
I felt a rush of… something… race through my heart. I didn’t feel that empty ache anymore. I felt a touch… a connection… of real Magic reaching out. If I had anything to give my sister this Christmas, it wasn’t my sorrow. No. It is this joyous magic.
Fantasy vs. Real Magic
I found a site called “Magic is for Grown-ups” and was excited to read about another perspective of how grown-ups perceive their Magic. But it was actually more about Escapism Magic – as found in entertainment media: books, movies, TV. Fantasy can be intriguing and fun, but it is not our Real magic.
The fact is, most grown-ups shrug off their real Magic as just a coincidence, or luck, or synchronicity.
Our Everyday Real Magic
I think everyday Real Magic feels natural: like a beloved memory coming to life. It feels surprising, intimate, divine.
When Grown-ups understand our real Magic, we often experience it as a:
- touch or connection;
- a knowing or intuition;
- power of Nature;
- memory come-to-life;
- or an ethereal visit from a loved one who has passed on.
Here are a series of heart-touching, Real Magic stories I have collected.
Anthony’s Nature Magic –
The daylight was beginning to wane, as Anthony’s tired axe split through one more log. He exhaled with exhaustion as the chips flew into the air – and his eyes were drawn upward. There! Right there! A hawk! Soaring through the trees – – – heading straight for him! Gliding low, its powerful wings thrumming the air — it swung past his shoulder – – – he could have touched it! Wonderstruck, he watched it heading back into the sky – taking Anthony’s breath with it! Suspended in a timeless, magic moment, he felt it…. He felt a new energy… within. It felt like… magic…. Anthony often sees hawks now. It’s his everyday magic. This is the real Magic of the powerfully serene world of Nature speaking to us.
Patricia’s Memory Magic –
“I do remember the magic of my childhood – when my whole family was together – each and every one – most especially for Christmas. My Dad had a way of making us know how lucky we were. My Mama was one of a kind! Beautiful inside and out and always bringing us together with her love for all of us. Then, as we got older, my sisters and I, and all our children, got together and celebrated Christmas Eve at my brother’s house. I miss those days! But the real magic of a child at Christmas comes every year if we just remember to REMEMBER it!!! It isn’t as easy now, with everyone so far apart and many gone, but the magic is always there if we just reach out and touch it.”
We feel this real Magic when we animate the legacy of beloved memories.
Carl’s Magic Ethereal Visit –
Carl stood in the snowfield looking at the blue, endlessly blue sky. But something else suddenly caught the corner of his eye: a cardinal – fluttering down to the old cornstalks – impossibly red against the pure white snow. He couldn’t miss it, and he suddenly felt his heart shiver. He knew – this was his son, paying him a visit – whispering, Yes! I am gone – and still, the world is filled with blessings! This is the real Magic of an ethereal visit from a loved one who has passed on.
Remember
These are real stories of real magic in grown-ups, who have remembered the real Magic they knew in their childhood. These grown-ups experience – and know – their magic. They acknowledge it – they appreciate it – in those abiding moments, under grace, in perfect timing.
The Magic is real. The Magic is always here – waiting for you. All you have to do is…
Light On!
